Amethyst Opal – Purple Dream

Purple Gem from Mexico

Amethyst Opal is one of the most unusual varieties in the kingdom of opals. The rough opal is found in up to 10cm-thick veins between other sedimentary layers. These stones consist mainly of opal, but are often combined with other minerals, such as chalcedony. The purple hues, often mysteriously dark, but also varying to a bright lavender or violet, are the main colours of this opal, comparable with the colours of amethyst - hence the name.

These opals often show interesting patterns, drawn by other colour components in black or cream-white. Thus, each individual Amethyst Opal is unique and unmistakable. Because only a very small deposit has been discovered so far, Amethyst Opals are only available in very small quantities, as a rare delight for opal collectors.

Amethyst Opal is said to support our overall well-being. It is used to enhance attentiveness and the ability to concentrate, and to bring inner peace and calm.

Mining and processing

This opal comes from the mountains near the village of Zacatecas in the Mexican state of the same name. The exact mining location is known only to a select few people.
